Leading Strategy in Practice: A dynamic learning experience in Maastricht

21-04-2026

From 15–17 April 2026, MSM welcomed a diverse group of international professionals to Maastricht for the 3-day Short Executive Programme on Leading Strategy. Participants came together to strengthen their strategic leadership skills, exchange experiences, and explore how to translate strategy into action in today’s rapidly changing business environment.

The programme focused on strategy as a continuous and practical leadership process, rather than a static plan. Through a combination of academic frameworks and real-world insights, participants explored how to analyse competitive environments, assess internal capabilities, and make effective strategic choices.

Mr Oliver Olson, covered key topics such as competitive advantage, strategic trade-offs, and organisational alignment. Guest lecturers Steven Tallman, Juuso Hämäläinen, and David Forer enriched the learning experience by sharing practical perspectives on leadership transitions, strategy execution, and market dynamics in high-technology industries.

The interactive and practice-oriented approach was highly valued by participants. Afaf Assas from Algeria reflected on her experience:
“Overall, it was a very enriching experience. What I appreciated most is that the programme went beyond theory and provided practical insights into strategic leadership, such as understanding the CEO’s agenda, the importance of organisational alignment, and how to apply strategic analysis tools in real situations.”

A key takeaway for Ms Assas was the importance of translating strategy into measurable action:
“The programme highlighted the importance of translating vision into action through clear structures and measurable outcomes. In particular, the use of KPIs and OKRs stood out as essential tools to align strategic planning with execution.”

Mr Saad Afzal from Pakistan, also emphasised the strong balance between theory and practice:
“This experience was truly a blend of theory and practical insights, where every session added a new perspective on leadership, strategy, and execution. From strategic analysis and decision-making to aligning organisations with clear KPIs, the learning was very much relevant.”

He also highlighted the value of the faculty and guest speakers:
“A special thanks to our lecturer Oliver Olson for his engaging and insightful sessions, and to all the guest speakers who enriched the programme with real-world experiences and diverse viewpoints.”

The international and multicultural setting added an extra dimension to the learning experience. Participants exchanged perspectives from different industries and regions, broadening their understanding of global strategic challenges. “Exchanging with participants from different countries and industries gave us new perspectives on how challenges are approached in different contexts. It really pushed me to think beyond my usual way of working,” said Ms. Assas.

Mr. Afzal fully agrees with these words, noting the value of peer learning:
“It was also a pleasure learning alongside amazing fellow participants from different backgrounds, making the experience even more valuable through shared discussions and collaboration.”

Beyond the classroom, Afzal also mentioned the beautiful location:
“Maastricht itself is a beautiful city, rich in culture, calm, and truly a wonderful place to visit and learn.

Throughout the three days, the combination of conceptual frameworks, practical tools, and real-life examples created a dynamic and engaging environment. Participants left with a personal strategic action plan, ready to be applied directly within their own organisations.
