Meet MSM's staff members: introducing Nicky De Bie

16-12-2019

At MSM, we are proud of the more than 47 staff members who are committed and eager to fulfill our mission in offering management and entrepreneurship education, advice and research to individuals and organisations from all over the world. To become more acquainted with our staff members and to show you how it feels for them working at MSM we will each month highlight one of our staff members. This month the spotlight will be on Nicky De Bie.

Let me introduce myself…
My name is Nicky De Bie and I work as a student counsellor for the residential full-time MBA and Master in Management students.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree of Science in Psychology from Maastricht University (UM), with a minor in Clinical/Abnormal Psychology. Furthermore, I have certifications in counselling, coaching, mental health and wellbeing, and I am currently pursuing a Master of Science in Education.

While studying at the UM, I have worked at the Marketing & Communications department as event and communications officer. In this job, my main focus was the organisation of various internal events. In addition, I gave presentations about studying Psychology at the UM across the Netherlands. I really loved working with (prospective) students and enjoyed the positive energy during the events and presentations. After a gap year I decided to join Maastricht School of Management (MSM) in 2019, first as an Admissions Officer, and now as the Student Counsellor.

I want to make sure that our students have a positive experience right from the start…
As a student counsellor, the mental health and wellbeing of our students is my main priority. I want our students to have a positive academic journey at MSM and I try to achieve this by organising individual counselling sessions, peer group sessions, workshops and events. Besides mental health, career counselling is also one of the focus points of my job: I want to make sure that our students are prepared when entering the job market after they graduate from MSM.

Working with all kinds of different people is what I like the most. My current position at MSM feeds into this perfectly: our highly diverse classrooms ensure that I work with different people with different backgrounds every day. This in turn also teaches me a lot about other cultures and backgrounds!

In my spare time you can often find me…
There are many things I like to do when I am not working or studying: I like to read and to be creative. Previously I was into drawing, painting and pyrography, but we recently bought a house that we are currently renovating, so my creativity is now visible in the different DIY projects. Furthermore, I love to dance (salsa), spending time with my friends & family and I like watching shows and movies. And last, but not least…I love to travel. I have been to Spain, Italy, UK, USA, Indonesia and more. Indonesia has a special place in my heart, as my grandparents are both from Indonesia. Next up: traveling for work and holiday to the Philippines!

Something else I want you to know about me…
I am an animal lover: I have been a volunteer at a local shelter for a year, where I took care of the kittens and cats (and occasionally the dogs as well). It involved a lot of cleaning, but also a lot of cuddling and playing. I especially loved taking care of the kittens, they are so cute! I have two rescue cats (they are sisters!) and one day, I hope to be able to foster kittens myself. We also had a dog growing up, and I really miss having a dog around. One day we can hopefully add a labrador, golden retriever or husky to our family!
