Empowering Principals to Manage Innovations in Agriculture SMKs in Indonesia

JEMBER – Three Dutch-Indonesian cooperation projects, namely SAS21, Ready4work and LMSINDO collaborated to hold a training entitled "Empowering Principals to Manage Innovations in Agricultural SMK's in Indonesia" at Aston Jember, East Java - Indonesia. This activity involved several organizations such as Maastricht School of Management, AERES University of Applied Science, HollandDoor, CITAVERDE college, Has University of Applied Science, Lentiz Education Group, IPB University, College of Vocational Studies IPB University, State University of Malang, VHL University of Applied Science, VEDCA, Zone College, and Polbangtan Bogor.

The training activity was attended by 11 principals who received the cooperation project as follows.

  9. Lembang Animal Husbandry Vocational School – Asep
  10. 1SMKN 1 Cibadak – Juanda
  11. SMKN 1 Bawen – Imrotul Azizah

The activity started with a welcoming speech by the chairman of the committee, Antonya Rumondang Sinaga from the College of Vocational Studies - IPB University. Mr. Saryadi Guyatno, S.T., MBA. The Directorate of Partnerships and Alignment of Business and Industry, Directorate General of Vocational Education, Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, also gave a Keynote speech. He stated "This training is very important because the Principal is tasked with ensuring the quality of educational services to students in order to answer DUDIKA's demands".

On the second day, Mrs. Amalia also stated, "A leader must be able to compare his/her personality and the educational institution he/she leads with criteria that are not the same as others so that he/she has characteristics and is able to show his/her superiority". In line with this, Ibu Sari stated that "Creativity and innovation must continue to be raised in order to be able to adapt to the demands of society, sometimes we need to think outside the box or outside of our habits so that we can differentiate ourselves from others". "In its operations, school organizations also have strategies to continue to grow and develop, including financing strategies, facilities, community change, academic accountability, and operational support," concluded Mr. R. Dikky who was also the resource person for the team.

This training which lasted for 5 days was designed on the basis of providing materials and inviting speakers who are experts in their fields. The training was guided by Agus Gunawan PhD. Activities included theoretical workshops in combination with practical tips, as well as reflection and peer review on school development plans where each principal was asked to make a presentation. The expected output from the results of the discussions of the principals was to be able to formulate alternative strategies to maximize entrepreneurship-based learning innovations that are more effective with various backgrounds of the principals' institutions.

In addition to receiving training materials, participants also had the opportunity to conduct comparative studies at SMKN 5 Jember. At the location of the visit, the participants saw firsthand how the students' practice processes in all lines of activity ranging from the practice of cultivating various types of plants, seeds, machinery workshops, labs, network culture, product processing and aquaculture to smart farming. Participants saw various facilities and infrastructure supporting competence, as well as having direct discussions with the school community and several DUDI parties who were also present during the visit. The purpose of this comparative study was for school principals to learn from the processes and steps taken by SMKN 5 Jember to become a Center of Excellence in their area.

To conclude this event, principal participants strengthened their competence to manage and facilitate innovation in their SMK in line with the revitalization program of the Vocational Department of the Ministry of Education and Culture with special attention to; development and implementation plans (revitalization), leadership and coaching skills to manage innovation and deal with resistance, and build linkages with DUDIKA.

About SAS21
The project is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and aims to improve demand-driven vocational training and education in poultry and dairy in Indonesia. The project is a cooperation between MSM, the Vocational School of IPB University and the Aeres Group.

About LMSINDO
The aim of the multiple-year project is to strengthen SMK teacher training on national and regional level by enhancing the educational and organizational capacities of the MoA POLBANGTAN system and SMKs, assisting SMK-PP Kupang to upgrade to the status of agricultural polytechnic. Furthermore it’s important to strengthen linkages on national and provincial level by establishing collaborative frameworks between education, government and the private sector (triple helix). The project will strengthen the overall agriculture teacher training further by bringing the Ministry of Agriculture into the project framework, creating robust and seamless coordination to prepare scaling up process.

JEMBER – Tiga project kerjasama Indonesia Belanda yaitu SAS21, Ready4work dan LMSINDO kembali berkolaborasi mengadakan training bertajuk “Empowering Principals to Manage Innovations in Agricultural SMK's in Indonesia” pada Senin hingga Jum’at (22-26/11/2021) bertempat di Aston Jember, Jawa Timur, Indonesia. Kegiatan ini melibatkan beberapa organisasi seperti halnya Maastricht School of Management, AERES University of Applied Science, HollandDoor, CITAVERDE college, Has University of Applied Science, Lentiz Education Group, IPB University, College of Vocational Studies IPB University, Universitas Negeri Malang, VHL University of Applied Science, VEDCA, Zone College, dan Polbangtan Bogor.

Kegiatan training dihadiri oleh 11 Kepala Sekolah penerima Proyek kerjasama diantaranya;

Kegiatan dimulai dengan welcoming speech oleh ketua panitia, Antonya Rumondang Sinaga dari College of Vocational Studies - IPB University. Bapak Saryadi Guyatno, S.T., MBA. Direktorat Kemitraan dan Penyelarasan Dunia Usaha dan Dunia Industri, Direktorat Jenderal Pendidikan Vokasi, KemenDikBud RI, turut memberikan Keynote speech. Beliau menyatakan "Training ini sangat penting karena Kepala Sekolah bertugas untuk memastikan kualitas pelayanan pendidikan pada siswa guna menjawab tuntutan DUDIKA".

Pada hari kedua, narasumber Ibu Amalia juga menyatakan “Seorang Pemimpin harus mampu membranding personalnya dan lembaga pendidikan yang dipimpinnya dengan kriteria yang tidak sama dengan yang lain sehingga memiliki penciri serta mampu menunjukkan keunggulannya”. Sejalan dengan hal tersebut Narasumber Ibu Sari menyatakan bahwa “Kreativitas dan Inovasi harus terus dibangkitkan agar mampu menyesuaikan dengan tuntutan masyarakat, terkadang kita perlu berpikir out of the box atau di luar dari kebiasaan agar kita memiliki pembeda dengan yang lain”. “Dalam operasionalnya, organisasi sekolah juga memiliki strategi agar terus tumbuh dan berkembang antara lain strategi pembiayaan, fasilitas, perubahan komunitas, akuntabilitas akademik, serta dukungan operasional”, pungkas Bapak R. Dikky yang juga selaku tim narasumber.  

Training ini yang berlangsung selama 5 hari ini dirancang sedemikian rupa dengan beberapa materi dan pembicara yang ahli dibidangnya dan dipandu oleh Agus Gunawan PhD. Kegiatan meliputi lokakarya teoretis dalam kombinasi dengan tips praktis, serta refleksi dan peer review tentang rencana pengembangan sekolah dimana setiap kepala sekolah diminta untuk presentasi. Output yang diharapkan dari hasil diskusi para kepala sekolah adalah dapat merumuskan alternatif strategi untuk memaksimalkan inovasi pembelajaran berbasis entrepreneurship yang lebih tepat guna dengan berbagai latar belakang instansi asal para kepala sekolah.

Selain mendapatkan materi training, peserta juga berkesempatan melakukan studi banding ke SMKN 5 Jember. Di lokasi kunjungan para peserta melihat secara langsung bagaimana proses praktik siswa pada semua lini kegiatan mulai dari praktik budidaya berbagai jenis tanaman, perbenihan, bengkel alsintan, Lab. Kultur Jaringan, Lab. Pengolahan Hasil, budidaya perikanan hingga smart farming. Peserta melihat berbagai sarana dan prasarana pendukung kompetensi, sekaligus berdiskusi langsung dengan civitas sekolah dan beberapa pihak DUDI yang juga dihadirkan pada saat kunjungan. Tujuan dari studi banding ini adalah agar kepala sekolah belajar dari proses dan langkah yang dilakukan SMKN 5 Jember untuk menjadi Center of Excellence di wilayahnya.

Kesimpulan pada even ini, peserta kepala sekolah diperkuat kompetensinya untuk mengelola dan memfasilitasi inovasi di SMK-nya sejalan dengan program revitalisasi Departemen Vokasi Kemendikbud dengan Perhatian khusus pada; rencana pengembangan dan implementasi (revitalisasi), keterampilan kepemimpinan dan pembinaan untuk mengelola inovasi dan menghadapi penolakan, serta membangun keterkaitan dengan DUDIKA
