Universities as Catalysts for Sustainable Business Ecosystems
On the invitation of MSM’s partner UNDANA (Universitas Nusa Cendana, Indonesia), Huub Mudde, PhD., delivered a keynote speech at the 4th International Conference on Economics, Management, Accounting, and Tourism (ICEMAT). At the conference, scholars from Indonesia, Pakistan, India and Malaysia met to share the latest insights on sustainable finance and green economic development.
In his contribution, titled ‘Building Sustainable Business Ecosystems through Partnerships and Innovation’, Mudde posited that open innovation is a powerful mechanism for transforming businesses towards sustainability. He shared MSM’s experience of fostering and facilitating multi-stakeholder platforms and of governing these platforms with knowledge -, innovation - and consensus spaces. He posed that it gives an opportunity for universities to take up a central role in bringing actors together, contributing with knowledge and educating entrepreneurial graduates. But equally it poses the challenge for universities that if they want to stimulate a green economy, they need to be acting accordingly, be sustainable in strategy, education, research, community service and operations.
MSM and UNDANA currently cooperate in the framework of the Erasmus+ ENHANCE project. Coordinated by MSM, the four-year project brings together European and Indonesian universities to strengthen sustainability education, research and institutional practices. Through capacity building, transdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange, ENHANCE supports universities in becoming active drivers of sustainable development within their wider ecosystems.

This institutional collaboration project is part of MSM's Expert Centre on Emerging Economies. The department is an expert centre on sustainable private sector development in emerging and developing markets. We capacitate managers and professionals from government, private sector, NGOs, and post-secondary education in Africa, Asia, Middle East, and Latin America.
