Kick-off meeting sparks collaboration for sustainability education and research

The European Indonesian Partnership for Strengthening Sustainability and Environmental Education (ENHANCE) was officially launched on 24th February 2026 with a dynamic kick-off meeting hosted by IPB University in Bogor, Indonesia. The event brought together leading universities from Europe and Indonesia, marking the start of a four-year collaboration dedicated to advancing sustainability in higher education and research.

Under the coordination of Maastricht School of Management (MSM), the ENHANCE consortium brings together seven universities from Europe and Indonesia, including partners such as Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, the University of Göttingen, and leading Indonesian institutions. The kickoff meeting served as a platform to align on the project’s vision, governance, and implementation roadmap, setting the tone for a strong, collaborative partnership.

At the heart of ENHANCE, we share an ambition to transform the higher education system by embedding sustainability across curricula, research, and institutional practices. Through capacity building, transdisciplinary collaboration, and the integration of digital tools and systems thinking, the project aims to equip universities and students with the skills needed to tackle complex environmental and societal challenges.

The project will support the development of sustainability-oriented graduate programmes, mentor academic and administrative staff, and engage hundreds of students in innovative learning experiences. It places strong emphasis on inclusive and gender-sensitive approaches, ensuring that sustainability education is accessible and impactful.

Connecting European expertise with Indonesia’s rich socio-ecological context, ENHANCE creates a powerful platform for knowledge exchange, joint innovation, and long-term international cooperation. The project lays the foundation for universities to act as a key enabler and driver of sustainable development, both locally and globally.
