Mastering the challenge of financing and managing development projects

17-10-2019

In the past two weeks, we have welcomed a group of 21 participants in MSM’s Project Finance and Project Management course. These two 5-day courses are designed to further develop the skills, knowledge and essential techniques for successful, cost-effective management of both large- and small-scale projects.

The first week kicked off with Project Finance and was provided by three lecturers: Mr. Angelo Corelli, Associate Professor of Finance and Accounting at MSM, Mr. Paul Horrocks, Head of Private Finance for Sustainable Development at OECD-OCDE and Wiebke Bart-Zuccalà, Policy Analyst at the OECD on Private Finance for Sustainable Development. Throughout the week, the participants worked on improving their skills to access funding sources in the modern global economy and were introduced to various financial instruments and tools needed for financing, development and management of projects. Furthermore they broaden their knowledge on the role and importance of private finance in the 2030 sustainable development agenda and how the drivers of private finance differ from those of the public sector.

The participants look back at a very successful program: “Great course! Especially for those who are working in policy making and development projects. It gave me a better understanding on projects as such and how to raise funds for projects” according to Benat Tagoe from Ghana.

In the second week Rui Miguel Santos, expert and trainer in Results-Based Management and Evaluation of Development Programs & Projects, took the participants into the world of Project Management. They explored the various elements and procedures for effective project initiation, planning, implementation and closing of the projects. “Rui is very knowledgeable, open, friendly, easy to approach and willing to answer or discuss all the questions that we had.” Commented Klara Scupakova from Czech Republic

The Project Management program was organized in such a way that there was enough time for both theoretical input and practical insights, which was very well received by the participants. “The concept of having half a day course in class and half a day group discussions is a good combination to get the knowledge and to implement it in the available time frame. Also having group presentations every morning gave room for us to evaluate the knowledge that was provided the previous day”, according to Emilda Sayuti from Indonesia.

The in total 21 participants came from Libya, Thailand, Indonesia, Jordan, India, Algeria, Czech Republic, Iraq, Ghana, Ecuador, Uganda, Germany and Panama:  "Teaching a class with participants coming from different parts of the world, is at the same time stimulating and challenging. Lecturing to such a mixture of cultures and backgrounds results in an exchange of experiences and knowledge that is supposed to last for a long time. It is always beneficial to interact with experienced professionals who decide to improve their knowledge on specific topics. As a lecturer I see myself continuing to grow personally and professionally by being involved in these programs” said Angelo Corelli. Alessandra Rohrmoser from Panama added “Having the world in one room….was such a great experience! You don’t get that everywhere.”
