04-04-2024

Between 25 and 27 March, Mr. Drs. Andre Dellevoet on behalf of MSM took part in the first meeting of the AfriquEurope policy debate in the United Nations Conference Centre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The title of the meeting was; “The European Union and Africa in a multi crises world,” which conveyed the message that never more than now, new and more effective policies are needed to underpin an equitable and constructive relationship between the EU and its neighbor to the South.

Over a period of three years, the Jean Monnet policy debate aims to develop an evidence based, comprehensive policy advice on future relations between AU and EU. It covers a wide range of topics including: China in Africa, other external actors in Africa, the role of aid, trade and investment, regional integration, governance, peace and security and migration. Over 30 African and European institutions of higher education and think tanks are participating in this project. The University of Shanghai, Center for West Asian and African Studies, was also present.

MSM is co-chair of the working group on sustainable economic development, which in its turn encompasses many topics such as: Economic growth, Productive Structures, Extractive Industries, Agriculture and Agribusiness, Africa within the International Division of Labour: Supply Chains, Economics of Trade, Private Sector Development, Technological Innovation, Capacity building, Energy.

The meeting in Addis Ababa was very productive. Research papers on various, relevant topics were presented and debated, attended by senior diplomats of the EU and the Netherlands, and topics for further research identified. Much attention was also given to the way forward with a view to available budgets, workshops and publications.

The next workshop on regional integration is planned for May 2024 in Windhoek, Namibia.
