Private Sector Development Research and Publications

Our research focus area on Private Sector Development is concerned with shaping a competitive and dynamic private sector for sustainable growth.

The present era of globalization implies that the opportunities for the Global South is to stimulate and develop a private sector that combines the two goals of competitiveness and sustainability what is increasingly influenced by international standards and developments. For example, international agreements on trade and investment, but also on e.g. labour rights, inclusiveness and environmental protection, shape the extent to which the Global South governments can regulate local industries. But how the private sector is further development is influenced both by international organisations such as the World Bank, Multinational Corporations importantly the local eco-system.

The level of competitiveness of a region is determined by two layers. The first layer concerns core services related to health, education, security and infrastructure. The second layer focuses on five main cluster pillars: access to finance, research and development, sound policy, training institutions and advanced infrastructures. These two layers contribute together to the development of a sustainable private sector eco-system whereby the non-tangible aspects are included such as diversity, gender, entrepreneurial drive and ethics.

And development assistance from industrialised countries and international organisations, such as the World Bank, the UN and the OECD, also often includes funds earmarked for stimulating the local private sector, including Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs)
