EREVETS Project officially launched in Sierra Leone
Kick-off mission strengthens partnerships for Renewable Energy Education and Innovation
From 22 – 28 February 2026, the EREVETS project was officially launched in Sierra Leone through a kick-off mission led by Maastricht School of Management (MSM), together with Politeknika Txorierri from Spain and national partners Freetown Polytechnic, Eastern Technical University, and University of Sierra Leone – Fourah Bay College.
The mission combined internal coordination meetings, two public launch events in Freetown and Kenema, bringing together education institutions, government representatives, private sector actors, and civil society.
The EREVETS project aims to address the urgent need for skilled professionals in Sierra Leone’s renewable energy (RE) sector by enhancing the capacity of local TVET institutions. It aims to strengthen the renewable energy sector in Sierra Leone by updating curricula, entrepreneurship support, and strengthening the RE ecosystem through the development of the Quadruple-Helix partnership model.
Invited stakeholders also discussed policies, challenges, skill gaps, and opportunities for innovation in the RE sector. Challenges identified included limited equipment and internship opportunities, skills gap in technical competencies in installation and maintenance, but also there are strong opportunities for sector growth and private sector engagement.
The next steps in the coming months include stakeholder mapping, RE ecosystem mapping, assessment of stakeholders' readiness for Q-Helix partnerships, curriculum mapping and review, development of a communication and stakeholder engagement plan, and measures to encourage female participation in the renewable energy programmes.
The kick-off marks the beginning of a collaborative effort to build a more inclusive, sustainable, and renewable energy ecosystem in Sierra Leone.
