Ensuring a sustainable, prosperous and safe Sudan with the help of change management

26-05-2021

Change management, a term used for all approaches to prepare, support and help organizations, teams and individuals in making organizational change. And let ‘change’ exactly be what The Federal Ministry of Transport and The Federal Ministry of Urban Development, Roads and Bridges in Sudan is currently going through.

The ministries are in the midst of a crucial change process which needs high level leadership and management skills. These skills play an instrumental role in strategy implementation through contributing to organizational climate, team cohesion and individual engagement within the Ministry and other relevant organizations.

With the help of a one-year tailor-made-training (TMT), MSM is training middle level management of the Sudanese ministry with the goal to contribute to a sustainable, prosperous and safe Sudan. Part of this TMT is a 4-day training on the fundaments of Change Management, which recently was taught by change management expert Dr. Geert Heling.

Change agents
The overall goal of this course was to enable participants to act as a change agent in their own organization, using insights and practical skills that are necessary for effectively conducting organizational change. The participants acquired essential theoretical and practical insights and skills related to the process of organizational change and development, with a particular focus on organizational culture and the human side of change in general.

Dr. Heling took the participants through all steps of the change process on the basis of theory, models, frameworks, case study and real-life experiences. Throughout the 4-days a structured program was followed where the basics of organizational change were discussed but also organizational development, behavioral change, management expectations, the role of leadership, managing resistance, how to get people committed and the implementation and integration of organizational change.

Hybrid teaching
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic Dr. Heling was unfortunately not able to travel to Sudan to teach the change management course in person. Regardless of the pandemic, it was decided to go ahead with the training via a hybrid connection. The participants were able to follow the course together in a room, where the covid-19 measures were taken into account, while Dr. Heling taught them the fundamentals of change management through an online connection. As the participants were gathered in a room together this made working together on assignments and tasks enjoyable and an informative and cooperative environment was created.
