Breaking Barriers: Reflections on Gender Equality and Leadership

27-02-2025

By Duygu Yazicioglu - MSM Master in Management student

Being honored with the Woman Ambassador Scholarship at Maastricht School of Management, I have had the privilege of engaging in meaningful conversations about gender equality and leadership. Through an insightful interview with Meltem Bilgebay, an administrative manager in AgeSA Private Pension and Life Insurance, and my own experiences as a young female leader, I explore the evolving roles of women in family, work, and society.

Growing Up in a Household of Strong Women

Meltem Bilgebay, born and raised in Istanbul, describes her upbringing in a family where women played a dominant role. She grew up witnessing a respectful and supportive partnership between her parents. Her mother, a strong and independent woman, never compromised her self-respect or opinions, setting an example for Meltem and her sisters. This nurturing environment instilled in her the belief that women should pursue their ambitions fearlessly. Reflecting on my own journey, I realize that my leadership skills were shaped by my early exposure to role models who encouraged me to embrace challenges rather than shy away from them.

Shifting Dynamics in Household Responsibilities

Over generations, the division of domestic responsibilities has undergone a significant transformation. While Meltem's father was deeply respectful and supportive of her mother, he adhered to traditional norms that limited his involvement in household chores. Today, however, men and women are more likely to share responsibilities equally, driven by the increasing participation of women in the workforce. Meltem highlights how this shift reflects a broader societal change where equality is not just an ideal but a necessity. She observes that women today make more conscious choices in their partnerships, ensuring mutual support and shared responsibilities. This perspective underscores how evolving societal norms are gradually fostering more balanced and equitable relationships.

Balancing Career and Family: The Power of Support

One of the most inspiring aspects of Meltem’s story is the unwavering support she received from her husband. When faced with career advancements that required increased commitment, she never had to choose between family and work. Her husband's encouragement gave her the confidence to seize opportunities that many women hesitate to pursue. Unfortunately, not all women are met with the same level of support. Cultural expectations and societal norms often limit their ability to advance professionally. Through my own leadership journey, I have encountered similar challenges, particularly in male-dominated fields like sports and management. Yet, by surrounding myself with allies and advocating for equal opportunities, I have been able to overcome barriers and create inclusive spaces.

The Evolving Perception of Women’s Careers

Meltem acknowledges that societal perceptions of women’s careers have changed over time. In the past, women often pursued higher education only to become homemakers after marriage. However, modern generations increasingly recognize the importance of financial independence. Families now encourage their daughters to build their own careers, ensuring they have the autonomy to make life decisions on their own terms. This shift resonates deeply with me. As a woman who aspires to leadership positions, I believe that professional success should never be defined by gender but by capability and determination.

Lessons for Future Generations

When asked about the key change she would like to see in society, Meltem emphasized the role of mothers in shaping the next generation. Raising children with a mindset that values gender equality is crucial. Strong, confident, and independent women serve as role models for their daughters; and for their sons, who grow up understanding the importance of respect and partnership. She believes that instilling confidence in young girls and encouraging them to pursue their ambitions fearlessly is key to breaking down societal barriers and achieving true gender equality.

A Call to Action

Women’s empowerment is not just about individual success - it is about creating a world where future generations do not have to fight the same battles we do today. Through shared stories, mutual support, and unwavering determination, we can continue breaking barriers. As I continue to learn and grow, the stories of inspiring women like Meltem Bilgebay remind me of the power of resilience and the importance of embracing every opportunity for personal and professional development.

On this International Women’s Day, I encourage every woman to embrace her strength, pursue her ambitions without hesitation, and support others in their journeys. Gender equality is not a distant dream - it is a reality we build together, one step at a time
