Enhancing water efficiency and food security through Egyptian TVETs

This project intends to enhance water efficiency and food security in Egypt by means of capacity building at TVET/HE's and fits perfectly in OKP’s priority themes for Egypt:

  • Water, linked to food and nutrition security (FNS)
  • Efficient water management for climate smart agriculture (CSA

The project will set up thematic workgroups around identified issues in the Delta and at the edge of the Desert, combine Dutch and Egyptian expertise, involving people at TVET/HE like institutions and other stakeholders in an inclusive way, striving for tangible and applicable outputs and disseminate these to farmers, small enterprises, agro-industries and exporters


Medium term impact of the project through a contribution to the:

  1. Education system (TVET/HE) is of better quality, more relevant and accessible, in line with SDG 4
  2. The partnerships between the Dutch and Egyptian organisations and persons involved are inclusive and sustainable, in line with SDG 17
  3. The organisations key to sectoral inclusive development of partner countries are strengthened by an inflow of better trained individuals

Young professionals/potentials from participating institutes both in Egypt and the Netherlands had an opportunity to gain international experience in a multi-cultural setting with their own profession, a ‘once in a lifetime professional experience’.

Type of service provided
Interactive sessions will comprise of ‘sandwich programs’: lectures, expert presentations, field visits and hands-on assignment in which all participants play an active role and work on:

  • Take home assignments, to enhance the linkage with participant’s own workplace
  • Teachers/trainers/experts at the Netherlands’ and Egyptian side will give feedback on assignments,
  • Improvement- and action plans on how to apply outputs in a sustainable way in practice
  • Development of adapted training courses and curriculum development.

On the one hand farmers, small enterprises and agro-industries, on the other the TVET/HE like organizations who should be better equipped in terms of capacity and access to resources and small investments allowing them to inform their students and practitioners dealing with these target groups with empirically based messages to deal with climate change.

Focus will be on 15 staff from each of the two universities involved, ESRI and FAKU. Next they will be working with students but also farmers. Per teacher at least 15 students per year will be reached working on their final project.

The project will run from January 2019 until December 2021
