A guide to MBAs in Maastricht

There are current two institutions offering Master of Business Administration degrees in Maastricht: (i) Maastricht School of Management (MSM) and (ii) Maastricht University School of Business and Economics (SBE). What are the differences between these? Which degree is best for me? On this page we make a quick comparison of the key features and costs of each program, so that you as prospective student can find the best program for your needs.

Two separate institutions
Both Maastricht School of Management and Maastricht University belong to the most international education institutions of the Netherlands. Not surprising when you consider the city of Maastricht as the gateway to important European cities such as Amsterdam, Brussels, London, Paris and Cologne.
MSM and UM are two separate institutions, but work closely together where possible. However the MBA programs offered by both institutions are different programs, each with its own characteristics.

Study part-time or full-time?
When you have the opportunity to fully focus on your MBA studies for an entire year, the full-time MBA program of Maastricht School of Management is the right choice for you. During one year you will be immersed in an international and multicultural study environment preparing you to become a global manager. The program starts in September of each year.

If you prefer to combine the MBA study with your job responsibilities, then the Executive MBA would be the ideal fit for you. The design of MSM’s part-time Executive MBA program enables you to balance the pressures of work with study. To be completed in 24 months, the program includes conveniently paced lectures and classes conducted through eight spread-out modules, minimizing the time that you need to spend away from work. You can start in January or September of each year.

SBE’s Executive MBA program is designed in a modular format with four educational weeks each year. The total study load can be spread over a minimum of two and a maximum of four years.

Accreditations and recognition
The MBA programs that MSM offers at its campus in Maastricht are the only NVAO (Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Organization) accredited MBAs in Limburg. This means the degree is legally recognized in the Netherlands. Furthermore, the MSM programs are accredited by IACBE, AMBA and ACBSP. This makes the MBA programs of Maastricht School of Management quadruple accredited.
The Executive MBA of Maastricht University is triple accredited: AMBA, EQUIS and AACSB.

In 2014, MSM was one of the three nominees for the Nuffic Orange Carpet Award in recognition for its contribution to the internationalization of higher education in the Netherlands. In 2014 MSM was a finalist for the prestigious Association of MBAs innovation award for MSM’s valuable contribution to the development of worldwide MBA education.

Specializations
An MBA in itself is already distinctive and the gold standard in management education as shown by many surveys. You can make it even more valuable by choosing one of the exciting specializations that are offered in the full-time MBA and part-time Executive MBA of Maastricht School of Management. SBE’s Executive MBA does not offer specializations.

International and diverse classroom
MSM’s strong partnerships and 60-year experience in emerging markets result in a diverse, international and multicultural environment. The more than two dozen nationalities (worldwide!) represented in a typical full-time MBA class at MSM create a stimulating learning environment inside and outside the classroom.

The student cohorts of the Executive MBA programs of MSM and SBE are also characterized by internationality and diversity. Given the part-time nature of the program participants are mainly coming from Europe. Apart from their nationality and culture, participants bring their experience from different professional backgrounds and a diverse range of sectors.
