Are you an ambitious graduate or young professional who aims for a successful career in top management?
The MSM Master in Management (MM) program is a one-year full-time master’s program for aspiring young professionals who want to fulfill their potential to contribute on the very top to the management of their organizations, whether in the private or public sector. Research-based knowledge is combined with a broad interdisciplinary view of management in courses that take an explicitly strategic and integrative view of the management function. Throughout the program, you will develop your analytical, creative and social skills in assignments in which you connect academic knowledge to the real world of organizations.
Our MM provides you with a first necessary step to fast-forward your career to higher levels by providing you with a solid foundation in the practice and theory of management in a fast-changing global world. During this course you will be provided with the opportunity to understand how to steer your organization to high performance in a diverse and multicultural international business context. You will learn from experienced faculty and stimulating fellow participants from different cultural, business and study backgrounds. The MSM Master in Management will ultimately challenge you to develop your own unique approach to management that inspires.
The MM program targets recent graduates as well as young professionals with the ambition to pursue leading positions in the competitive global marketplace.
Why should you follow the MSM Master in Management?
Connect theory to practice
Besides providing theoretical knowledge, the MSM Master in Management will equip you to put this knowledge into practice. At various stages during the program you will learn how to develop your own approach to solve organizational problems and turn opportunities into business success. At course level you will conduct group and individual assignments where you will actively demonstrate your newly acquired knowledge and skills. You will finalize your Master’s program with an integrative assignment in the form of a business consultancy project or an applied research project.
In your business consultancy assignment you will confront a challenge facing a particular organization and provide a creative and practical business solution through professional application of your newly developed management skills. If you choose to do the applied research project you will critically study a general challenge facing organizations in a particular industry, sector or country, and propose and defend a new approach for rising to this challenge.
Become a responsible manager
Our MM program is people-focused: organizations are created and exist by people for people. Hence you will gain a deeper understanding of how organizations that are responsibly managed adopt and adhere to ethical standards. In this regard you will study what works and what does not in corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainable development. We subscribe to the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME). Therefore social responsibility and business ethics are a common theme throughout the program.
Learn and network through diversity
You will develop your management skills in a truly international and multicultural classroom with fellow participants from all over the world. Not only will they represent various cultural backgrounds, but they will also come from different business sectors, study backgrounds and different personal networks. In the global context your personal networks and multicultural leadership skills are vital ingredients of career success.
Get access to our broad business network
Our strong links to the business community will give you exposure to the best companies and organizations in the Maastricht region, who best exemplify successful global business and management. This is facilitated through our international management mentorship program, a platform that links our talented, experienced and diverse group of Master’s candidates on an individual basis to representatives of the local and regional business community. Furthermore work visits will be organized to regional companies and organizations throughout the program.
The curriculum consists of 16 courses and an integrative final project resulting in a total of 60 ECTS and equivalent study load of 1800 hours.
Note: this curriculum is subject to change.
The MM year starts with a two-week introduction. During this introduction you will follow workshops to sharpen your communication and networking skills, including presentation skills, group dynamics, meeting skills and writing skills. These workshops, combined with teambuilding activities will give you the opportunity to get to know your fellow participants.
The Master of Management program includes two foundation courses. The course ‘Introduction to Leadership and Management’ introduces you to the basic and interrelated concepts of management and leadership. You will learn about the main tasks and roles of management in organizations and the impact of management practices on organizational performance. The second foundation course aims to develop your applied business research skills to support you in developing your final project proposal.
Functional processes in an organization deal with similar types of processes. In the functional courses you will acquire and apply knowledge in six functional management areas: operations management, marketing and relationship management, human resources management, management of information systems, financial management and cost accounting.
The integrative courses take a more overall managerial perspective on organizations. The four integrative courses reflect the four categories of managerial tasks and skills as identified by the management writer Robert Quinn in his ‘Competing Values Framework’.
The Master in Management program is a generalist management program. However it does provide you with an opportunity to go deeper into topics that are currently relevant. The Foundation, Functional and Integrative courses in the MM program are based on best practices in management that are fundamental and have been proven over time to be important for any manager. However, management is a ‘living’ discipline which evolves over time. In the Special Topics portion of the curriculum, we are able to update the courses from time to time to keep abreast of the most important issues facing managers at any given time. For the academic year 2016-2017 the Special Topics will be in the area of International Business.
Here are some examples of Special Topics that could be introduced in the future*:
- International business
- Education management
- Health management
- Hospitality and tourism management
- Public management
- Social entrepreneurship
- Business, management and law
*please note that MSM does not guarantee these Special Topics will be available in any given year; please note that Special Topics are subject to change.
The MM program concludes with program integration, an individual project that will require you to prove your ability to integrate the individual core subjects of the MSM MM program to solve an organizational challenge. The final project takes the form of a business consultancy project or an applied research project, and clearly reflects the professional approach in this master’s program.
The business consultancy project involves how to advise a real life organization in solving a specific problem it is facing. Part of the business consultancy project will consist of doing business research to further analyze the problem.
The applied research project involves researching practical problems that organizations are confronted with, and formulating recommendations drawn from the research. Where the business consultancy project focuses on one organization (N=1) and a kind of formal ‘client organization’, the applied research project focuses on a management or business problem encountered by a larger number of organizations (N>1). No matter which project is chosen, the aim is to enhance and improve management practice.
