Female Talent Development Training in Palestine

14 November 2017

From 5 until 9 November 2017, MSM supported a Female Talent Development Training, which was conducted in Jericho, Palestine. The training is part of a project, which is implemented by MSM and four Palestinian universities (Al Quds, An Najah, Khadoorie and Hebron).

The objective of the training was to facilitate female faculty to obtain leadership positions in their respective universities. To achieve this, the training addressed subjects like completing a gender checklist and the mandate and capacity of a Gender Unit in Palestinian universities. Furthermore, topics of interest were affirmative action, second-generation gender bias, intentional and unintentional gender discrimination, sexual harassment and work-life balance.

A highly experienced Palestinian gender expert with a strong link to universities in Palestine facilitated the training together with an international gender consultant. The training was highly interactive in nature.  A number of presentations were held, but the focus was on group exercises, debates and collaborative work to produce an action plan. In the first three days, twenty women participated, mostly from lectures, assistant professor or lab technician level. On the fourth day, eight participants from senior management (four women and four men) joined them. They stayed the remaining two days and worked together with the other participants. The feedback on the training from all participants was very positive; networking between women from various universities was highlighted as a positive point.

The main outcome of the training was an “Action Plan for the Development of Female Talent”. One template Action Plan was developed based on four issues, which were agreed by all. Each university thereupon developed their tailor-made plan. In February 2018, a follow-up Training of Trainers (ToT) is planned at MSM premises in the Netherlands for a core group of twelve participants. Work on the Action Plans will continue in the meantime, and will be finalized during that ToT.
