Short profile
After a short career as Social Worker, Els Weijers studied Literature and after her cum laude graduation at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Els worked as Researcher (aio) at this university. Her subject was narrative structures in the work of the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. For economical reasons, Els chose to combine this project with a job as Policy Advisor on Education for the city of Amsterdam. In 2000 she defended her thesis ‘Nietzsche als verteller, hoe het lichaam wordt wat het is’. In 2001 Els became Head of the Education department at the City of Amstelveen and was trained in integrated management at De Baak. In 2002 Els was asked to manage a combination of departments and got the position of Head of Social Development. In 2005 she created an ‘integrated policy department’ for the city of Amstelveen, a department where next to the policy advices on social development (education, social affairs, culture, sports), economical affairs, international relations, urban development, international marketing and acquisition and regional affairs were situated. As Head of Strategy she managed this department and was responsible for the production of integrated advice on all the different fields, subsidy delivery, project development and implementation and the relations with the business community and the not-for-profit organizations. In 2005/6 Els followed the Advanced Management Program at Nyenrode to reflect on her experiences and leadership in local government. In 2010 she applied for the position at MSM, attracted by MSM’s mission to educate students from developing countries and emerging economies and the challenge how to support this by creating effective and mutually beneficial relations between students, alumni and businesses. In her position as Director Operations at MSM, Els is next to the Career Center responsible for Marketing, Recruitment and Admissions and executing offices such as Travel Office, Procurements, Housing and Catering. Els is member of the Board of Directors and Secretary Board of Trustees.
