The Sustainable Development Center of MSM together with the Working Group on Industrialization Strategies in Developing Countries of the European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI) has organized an expert seminar in Maastricht on November 26, 2009.
Value chain issues have been subject to a systematic discussion focusing on the impact of global value chains on local upgrading strategies. Papers dealt with the examples of biological cotton, bio-fuels, the computer and the automobile industry. In total 20 papers were presented by a group of international researchers of which 15 will be incorporated in an envisaged publication.
The emphasis was on the role of governance structures in shaping global value chains. It came out very clearly that there is a role for donors, civil society, governmental and chain organizations in influencing value chains. Experiences with developing sustainable value chains in developing countries are limited so far, but a challenge for the near future.
